Discern, not

Discriminate

The Chapter House welcomes all free peoples of every kindred, tongue, size, and ancestral boundary.

We do not discriminate on the basis of age, ability, color, gender, military or family status, income, nationality, sex, or any characteristic protected by applicable law. This is the legal minimum. We meet it. We do not, however, mistake meeting it for wisdom, virtue, or the fullness of hospitality — which remain harder and older arts.

We reserve the right — indeed, we exercise the judgment — to refuse service to agents of the Shadow: those who come to dominate rather than to dwell, to unmake rather than to make, to surveil rather than to serve. This is not discrimination. It is discernment. No just law requires us to seat Sauron at the council table simply because he has filed the correct paperwork.

We acknowledge that enforcement of any kind is imperfect, fallible, and easily corrupted — that those appointed to name the Shadow sometimes name their neighbors instead, and that the holding of the banner of justice has too often become its own kind of power. We do not trust the banner. We trust your behavior, because it bears witness to what's in your heart.

We hold, with Faramir, that we "do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness" and we hold, with equal suspicion, the performance of virtue without its habitual practice.

Come in peace. Be welcome. Become friends.

All others: not yet.
